Do people with jobs use LinkedIn? September 2, 2009

I ask this question not to be rude or snooty, but because I am actually curious. Do people with jobs use LinkedIn?

When I was interning last semester and looking for a full time job I spent hours updating my LinkedIn profile. I fed in my blog, wrote a detailed summary of my skills and added every internship I had ever had to my profile. And then, I got a job. It’s four months later and I haven’t touched my LinkedIn profile. Does this make me look bad? Maybe. But I don’t think anyone is even looking at my LinkedIn profile. And even if they are, I don’t really care what they see because I’m not looking for a job.

Is there some sort of statistic about how many LinkedIn users are employed?

Further more, I wonder if Millennials even use LinkedIn, or if they are more comfortable networking on a site like Brazen Careerist?

So fill me in readers, do you use LinkedIn when you have a job?

Will subgroups save LinkedIn? July 5, 2009

I love social media, but I don’t really love LinkedIn. It’s not that I don’t see the importance of the platform and how it helps job seekers, recruiters, etc. But, I’ve really never been able to find any personal value in using it to network. (In fact if you really want to know how I feel about LinkedIn, check out Ron Bronson’s article on why he dumped LinkedIn). So when I got an e-mail announcing that LinkedIn was creating subgroups I wondered, will they save LinkedIn for me?

LinkedIn describes these subgroups like “breakout sessions at a conference,” which allows group managers to send messages to personalized audiences.

According to LinkedIn, “A subgroup is a space within your group where members can collaborate based on a function, project, topic, location or anything you wish. Subgroups have many features including Discussions, News, Jobs and Digest Emails, etc.”

This sounds pretty cool to me, so I logged into LinkedIn to check them out. Unfortunately, none of the groups I belong to have created any subgroups. And since I’m not a manager of any LinkedIn groups, I couldn’t create a subgroup either.

Seems to me like this will be an especially helpful feature for groups made after conferences and trade shows. It would be great to have location and interest based subgroups in a lot of the groups I belong to. But if you ask me, subgroups won’t really add that much to my user experience.

What do you think? Will subgroups saved LinkedIn?

This happened a few weeks ago, but I felt like it may be important to talk about. LinkedIN has announced that they are changing the way that groups are managed. They are making it a lot more like Facebook groups because you can:

Send Announcements-You are now able to send group announcements directly from your LinkedIn group to your members, via email. Your announcement will also automatically be posted as a discussion within the group so members can comment on it together.

Put RSS Feeds into Groups-It is now possible to add RSS feeds directly to your group. News items from your feed will automatically show up under the News tab.

Manage Discussions- Group managers now have full control over whether to enable the jobs discussion capabilities within a group. The jobs area enables members to discuss job opportunities without cluttering the main conversation.

Should be interesting to see if LinkedIN continues to adapt other technologies. Do you use any of these new LinkedIN features in your group?
