Facebook gifts I don’t understand June 15, 2009

It’s no secret that I LOVE Facebook. I love spending time on it, connecting with friends and coming up with ideas for Facebook marketing. But there is one thing I still don’t really understand about Facebook: Facebook gifts.

Now don’t get me wrong, if there is a free gift on Facebook I will usually find a friend to send it to. But actually paying money to send a virtual gift just isn’t up my alley. Maybe if the gifts were more accurately targeted to my friends. But, which one of my Facebook friends would I actually send a flamming bag of poo to?

I would only send that to an enemy, so why would I spend money on that Facebook gift?

And what about this lovely appetizer of cheese and crackers?

Would I send that to my friend who has a food blog? Maybe if the gift was delicious hummus on a cracker, but cheese? No thank you!

Next week is my cousin Justin’s birthday. Maybe I will send him basketball toilet paper?

Or maybe I’ll just send him a card?

I love getting gifts, but I just don’t understand these Facebook gifts!

Who would YOU send this gift to?

I love social media and I love charity, but I sometimes think they live in such different lands that I shouldn’t even use their names in the same sentence. But once again, Facebook has come along and proven me wrong.

Last week, in honor of their amazing accomplishment of having 200 million members, they created virtual gifts for numerous charities. When you purchase one of their special charity gifts, the proceeds go straight to the charity.

What a great idea Facebook! What would be an even better idea is if Facebook created a gift for a different charity each week. This way the charities could get more exposure and donations while Facebook enhanced their public image and corporate culture.  Come on Facebook, make this a social cause!
